The Mojarrb Framework: A Methodology for Diagnosing Small-Business Health
A diagnostic method for micro & small, owner-operated businesses — and the organizations that serve them at scale.
Abstract. Most small-business owners run on feel — without a clear, honest reading of how healthy their business is. The Mojarrb Framework is a diagnostic methodology for business health, built for micro and small, owner-operated businesses. It examines six pillars — Money, Customers, Marketing, Operations, Leadership, Direction — through a conversation that connects the dots across your areas and measures them against industry benchmarks, never taking a claim without evidence. The result is one auditable health number (the BIS), then a plan sequenced by survival. Understanding first, then a plan.
1. Why this framework exists
When a small business struggles, the owner treats what they can see — slow sales, a stubborn cost — while the real cause sits one layer down. But the deeper problem isn't that they have an unsolved problem; it's that they've never had a clear reading of their business's health in the first place. Businesses rarely fail because the idea was bad — they fail because a small weakness grew, unseen, because no one measured the health early. The Mojarrb Framework is the distilled pattern from diagnosing real businesses across every major sector: you can't fix, protect, or grow what you can't see clearly.
2. The gap: no clear methodology for small businesses
The celebrated frameworks were built for a different job or a different scale — and each is excellent at what it was made for. But a gap appears the moment you look for a diagnosis built specifically for the small business:
| Framework | Built for | Why it doesn't diagnose a small business |
|---|---|---|
| McKinsey 7S | Large organizations | Aligns big-org elements; no benchmark, no score |
| SWOT | Anyone (generic) | Subjective self-assessment — no evidence, benchmark, or priorities |
| Porter's Five Forces | Competitive strategy | Analyzes the market, not your business's health |
| Business Model Canvas | Designing a model | Maps a model — doesn't diagnose an operating one |
| Balanced Scorecard | Corporate performance | Heavy execution system; mismatch for an owner-run shop |
| EOS / Traction | Small–mid operating system | A system you implement, not a rapid benchmarked diagnosis |
What a small-business owner actually reaches for is SWOT on a napkin — subjective, unranked, with no market comparison. There has never been a rigorous, benchmarked, standardized diagnosis built for the owner-operated small business. That category was empty. The Mojarrb Framework fills it. "7S is the standard for organizations; this is that for small businesses."
3. Step one · The Six Pillars
Every business is examined across six connected pillars — plus two situational lenses (Urgency and Capacity). Strength in one pillar can't hide weakness in another.
4. The method — rigor built in
What makes it a diagnosis, not a survey, is five principles:
5. Step two · The Score (BIS)
The six pillars roll up into a single, auditable 0–100 health number — the Business Intelligence Score (BIS) — designed to be legible to a bank, a partner, or an investor, not just the owner. Crucially, the number is capped by your weakest pillar — so it can't be inflated by one strong area.
6. Step three · From diagnosis to a plan
This is where Mojarrb goes past a checklist. The understanding becomes direction: the reading becomes an ordered plan — survival first.
7. See it work — a worked example
The same method, run end to end — from raw conversation to a sequenced plan:
- Money — thin margin (weakest)
- Customers — loyal, they come back
- Marketing — invisible online
- Operations — everything runs through the owner
- Leadership — no delegation · Direction — unclear next move
NOW re-cost the menu · NEXT get found online · LATER a second location — only once it's healthy.
Illustrative — composite, not a real client. Numbers shown are examples.
8. Where it's used — the subject vs the scale-user
Who gets diagnosed is always a micro or small, owner-operated business. Who runs it at scale is the enterprise — whose entire portfolio is small businesses:
9. Grounded in evidence
The framework stands on Mojarrb's research: the Asymmetric Auditor Protocol (AAP), the diagnosis-benchmark study, and the venture-attrition analysis. Read the research →
10. The philosophy — understanding before action
You can't act well on a business you don't understand. Mojarrb gives you the honest reading first — measured and benchmarked — then turns it into direction. Knowledge, then a plan. Fixed rules and human judgment; evidence over vibes. This is the edge over 7S: it doesn't diagnose and stop — it diagnoses, then acts.
